The ancestors of the Innus of Essipit First Nation have roamed the Nitassinan territory for over 10,000 years, traditionally living by the rhythm of the seasons through hunting, fishing, and gathering. In 1892, the Essipiunnuat reserve ("the Innu of the shell river") was officially established by the Canadian government. The name Essipit stems from the Innu-aimun terms "esh" (shell) and "shipu" (river), referring to the Escoumins River. Characterized by high-altitude lakes surrounded by wild forest, the site is distinguished by its large main lake, 3 kilometers in length. Access to the estate is by car via a forest road, subject to a transit fee. On the territory, lakes are accessible by car, ATV, or on foot via trails. Domaine du Lac Bernier offers a wide range of activities focused on fishing, hunting, and outdoor vacations. Sport fishing for indigenous brook trout is available for overnight stays or day trips on the large three-kilometer lake, as well as on four other natural lakes, brooks, and rivers. Anglers have access to 14-foot aluminum boats (one boat per two people). Fishing can be practiced from a boat, fly fishing, from the dock, or by wading.
