This body of water supports an abundant population of native brook trout (wild, unstocked brook trout), with a possession limit set at 20 trout per person. Domaine du Lac des Cœurs offers European-plan stays including accommodation in comfortable 4-star cottages equipped with solar panels for lighting and refrigeration, as well as propane stoves and water heaters, wood stoves, and indoor amenities. Each group of two people is provided with a 14-foot aluminum boat, with the option to bring or rent a motor. On site, anglers benefit from a screened fish cleaning shelter and a fish smoker. The Innu community of Essipit (“the Innu of the River aux coquillages”) has lived on the Nitassinan traditional territory for more than 10,000 years. Their ancestral way of life was nomadic, focused on hunting, fishing, and gathering according to the rhythm of the seasons. In the 18th century, the development of the fur-trading business with European settlers gradually led the population to become sedentary. The Essipiunnuat Reserve was officially established by the Government of Canada in 1892 along the rivière des Escoumins. In 1978, the community committed to recreational and tourism development with the creation of Entreprises Essipit. Collectively owned
by members of the Innu community, the organization manages all outdoor activities, cottages, and outfitters (including Domaine du Lac des Cœurs). This community-based model promotes eco-responsible land stewardship, respect for natural resources, and the transmission of Innu culture to visitors.
Located in the Lac-au-Brochet sector of the Côte-Nord, north of Les Escoumins, Domaine du Lac des Coeurs is situated in the heart of the vast natural territory of the Essipit Innu community. This wild territory of over 420 km² includes more than 125 natural high-altitude lakes. This peaceful forest environment guarantees cool waters throughout the summer season. Access to the estate is by car via a forest road, subject to a transit fee. On-site, a network of hiking trails and ATV tracks provides easy access to the territory's various bodies of water.
Domaine du Lac des Cœurs is part of the wild outfitting territory of Essipit, spanning more than 420 km² north of Escoumins, on the North Shore. The area around Lac des Cœurs includes 15 natural lakes at higher elevations, which helps keep the water cold and ensures excellent aquatic activity throughout the summer, especially in July and August. These well-preserved aquatic environments are home to native brook trout and wild, unstocked landlocked char (squarehead), with an average catch size ranging from 6 to 12 inches. The forest cover and the surrounding terrain provide an ideal habitat for terrestrial wildlife, with
a strong, steady presence of big game such as moose and black bear.
