The George River is the iconic body of water for Helen Falls Lodge, located in the remote wilderness of Nunavik, approximately 35 miles from Ungava Bay. World-renowned as one of the top fly-fishing destinations for Atlantic salmon, the river features an exclusive fishing section extending over 4 kilometers with approximately 27 unique pools. Atlantic salmon gather here by the tens of thousands, held up during their upstream migration by massive rapids and waterfalls, providing spectacular and energetic fights for anglers. Fresh sea-run salmon retain their bright silver sheen upon arrival. In addition to Atlantic salmon, the George River and surrounding waters host healthy populations of Arctic char, lake trout, and brook trout, particularly in the larger pools and back eddies downstream of the camp. The river's varied structure—ranging from powerful rapids to deep pools and shallow runs—allows for diverse fly-fishing techniques, including the riffling hitch and dry fly fishing with bombers. Access to pools is primarily from the riverbanks or by wading with a walking staff, while helicopter excursions provide access to surrounding remote lakes and rivers.
