Permanent occupation began in 1872 when the community was founded by Joseph Tanguay and Marguerite Murdock, an Innu Métis, focusing development on cod and salmon fishing, seal hunting, and trapping. In 1897, Belgian aristocrat Johan Beetz settled in the village and married Adéla Tanguay, granddaughter of Joseph Tanguay. Trained in natural sciences and medicine, he competed with the Hudson's Bay Company in the fur trade before becoming a pioneer in silver fox breeding in 1903, later partnering with the Parisian house Révillon et Frères in 1910.
