The Leaf River and its estuary are located in Nunavik near the Inuit village of Tasiujaq. The Leaf River offers world-class sport fishing for Arctic char, Atlantic salmon, and sea-run speckled trout. The estuary's waters are brackish depending on the dramatic tides of Leaf Bay, creating a rich aquatic ecosystem where salmonids feed voraciously on shrimp and baitfish. It is the northernmost river in North America where Atlantic salmon spawn, subject to a strict catch-and-release conservation policy. Fishing is conducted primarily by drift fishing from outboard-powered freighter canoes or from shore at low tide. The river marks the boundary between the northern boreal forest and the Arctic tundra, attracting diverse wildlife including seals, beluga whales, black bears, and polar bears.
