The outfitter

The Leaf River Estuary Lodge is an Inuit outfitter, owned and operated by residents of the village of Tasiujaq, in the heart of Nunavik in far-northern Quebec — where the northern boreal forest meets the Arctic tundra. Founded in 2003, the lodge was built by Tasiujaq resident Johnny Cain and operates as Johnny and Billy Cain Outfitters. It specializes in world-class fishing for arctic char, Atlantic salmon and sea-run brook trout (sea-run speckled trout), which feed voraciously in the rich waters of the Leaf River Estuary and readily hit spinning lures and streamer flies. Fishing is done from outboard-powered freighter

canoes, with one experienced Inuit guide for every 2 or 3 anglers; char here commonly run 5 to 20 lb. The Leaf River is the most northern river in the Western Hemisphere where Atlantic salmon breed, so a strict catch-and-release rule applies to the salmon. The territory also offers exceptionally rich wildlife — black bear and polar bear, musk ox, barren-ground caribou, arctic fox, arctic wolf, ptarmigan — for photography as well as hunting. In winter (March and April), custom adventures unfold by snowmobile: skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, ice fishing, ptarmigan hunting, and even a night in an igloo. Accommodations are rustic but comfortable (toilets, running water, hot showers), with a modern kitchen and dining facility. The lodge is reached by air (Air Inuit) from Montreal to Kuujjuaq then Tasiujaq, and finally by boat to the lodge on the estuary.
