Prized for its scenic beauty, exceptionally clear water and good summer runs of Atlantic salmon, the river makes the Club a sought-after destination for fly anglers. The Club enjoys exclusive use of approximately 8 km of water containing 12 salmon pools (all of Sector 3 and part of Sector 4), divided into 4 fishing beats fished in daily rotation,
one per angler – including an upriver descent in a 24-foot canoe. The Club welcomes only small groups of four anglers at a time, each in a private room with a private bathroom and a wood-burning stove. Stays, in half-week or full-week formats, include accommodation, all meals (refined cooking that showcases fresh local seafood), fishing, professional guide service and transportation on site. Officially founded in 1899, the Saint John Salmon Club of Gaspé (Le Club de Saumon Saint-Jean) is part of a long tradition of Atlantic salmon fishing. The roots of fishing on the Saint-Jean River date back to the 1870s. The Curtis pool, recorded during that period, was named in honor of one of the club's founders, Mr. Fred Curtis. The establishment maintains detailed salmon catch records dating back as far as 1905. The original buildings, erected in the early 1900s, were initially located on the opposite bank of the Saint-Jean River. In August 1960, a major forest fire swept through
the area and destroyed all the facilities. By the spring of 1961, construction of the new lodge began on the current site, where the club still welcomes its guests today. The club's history also relies on the continuity of its staff and the transmission of local expertise. Manager Ray Rooney began working for the establishment in 1976 as a student before taking over management of the camp in 1983. Furthermore, the guiding profession is often passed down through generations, exemplified by guide Daniel Bechervaise, whose grandfather worked for the club for many years. For over a century, the club has prioritized hosting small groups and remains involved in Atlantic salmon conservation efforts.

Getting around on the waterway is done in particular by canoe, to head up the river toward the upstream sectors after breakfast.

The establishment has exclusive access to approximately 8 kilometers of river featuring a total of 12 salmon pools, covering all of Sector 3 and part of Sector 4. Fishing opportunities are also available occasionally in Sector 2 as well as at the Maitland pool in Sector 4. The pools offer a wide variety of hydrographic structures. The McDonald pool is characterized by a slow current, good depth, and a spawning area at its tail. The Home pool is located directly in front of the lodge. The Shanty pool offers a steady rapid, while the Roughwater pool provides a profile suited for wading during low water periods. Just downstream, the Still pool features a deeper area with a light current, providing excellent late-season conditions. In the upstream section, the beats lead to the Consul, Clandeboye, Countess, Lady Hamilton, Dufferin, Dufferin Run, and Curtis pools.
The Saint John Salmon Club offers fly fishing packages for Atlantic salmon and sea trout. Organized to host small groups of four anglers at a time, the establishment features a daily rotation system across four distinct beats. Outings are conducted by wading, by boat, or in 24-foot canoes to navigate the Saint-Jean River valley. Each angler is accompanied by a professional guide, and fly casting instruction is available for beginners. Fishing is practiced with wet or dry flies depending on water levels. In terms of conservation, a mandatory catch-and-release policy applies to adult salmon 63 centimeters and longer. Retention of
one grilse per half-week stay is permitted, subject to daily regulations. On-site, guests enjoy full meal service prepared by the lodge's chef. The menu highlights fresh ingredients and local seafood from Rivière-au-Renard, such as halibut, lobster, cod, and scallops. Beyond fishing, the region offers various excursion possibilities, including hiking and coastal sightseeing at Forillon National Park, as well as tours of the village of Percé, Percé Rock, and Bonaventure Island to observe its bird sanctuary.
