Birch Island Resort, also known as Reid’s Birch Island Resort, is a wilderness vacation estate nestled on a private island along the Winnipeg River system near the hamlet of Minaki in the Kenora District (Sunset Country region). The site is renowned for its historical heritage: the main lodge building was constructed over a hundred years ago by a director of the T. Eaton Company, as was the century-old boathouse preserved on site. The island experience combines sport fishing with high-end dining featuring meals prepared by a professional chef. The fishing territory extends across the Winnipeg River and adjacent waters such

as Rough Rock, Big Sand, Gun, and Pistol lakes. Anglers target walleye, muskellunge, northern pike, and bass. The outfitter encourages catch and release to preserve fish stocks and offers the services of expert local guides. In the spring, during the months of May and June, daylight lasts from 5 a.m. until nearly 10 p.m. This opening period coincides with fish congregating in their usual spawning areas, making them easier to locate. A spring stay also provides opportunities to observe local wildlife, notably black bears and their cubs near the creeks. Endorsed by professional anglers such as Bob Izumi, Jay Siemens, and Babe Winkelman, the resort offers a private island setting combining history, gastronomy, and fishing.
