Good to know
Wiinipaakw Tours is a Cree solidarity cooperative offering eco-cruises and northern adventures in James Bay, at the heart of Eeyou Istchee Baie-James, north of the 51st parallel. Aboard the Silver Dolphin and guided by Cree captains, you explore an immense territory (the James Bay Cree Lands cover 350,000 km², a fifth of Quebec) dotted with coastal islands, where you can spot belugas, caribou, polar bears, around a hundred migratory bird species and, in season, the northern lights. Departures run from Waskaganish (a coastal village at the mouth of the Rupert River) June 6 to July 18, then from Wemindji (at
the mouth of the Maquatua River) July 20 to October 21. The offering includes half-day cruises (2 to 3 hours) and full-day cruises (6 to 8 hours), guided walleye and pike fishing on the Rupert and Broadback rivers, and custom à la carte trips. It is as much a human and cultural encounter with the Cree as it is an adventure into raw, sovereign wilderness.
